West was born and raised in Altadena, CA just a few steps from Eaton Canyon and the San Gabriel Mountains.  This ready access combined with frequent family backpack and ski trips to the Sierra nearly assured that he would settle in Mammoth Lakes.  An early interest in medicine led him to start Jr. Lifeguarding at the age of 12. Since then, he has continued to expand his knowledge of first aid and first response.  Though a dedicated cross-country and track runner in high school, West made sure to save his winters for skiing.  Surprisingly, or not, this translated to his college years at the University of California San Diego, where he studied film and video. He thought summer was a much better time for schooling and took each winter quarter off to spend the season in Mammoth skiing.  After graduating, he spent a year and a half travelling the world making public outreach videos for JPL and NASA and exploring some of the world’s mountains and wild places.  A break in video work landed West back in Mammoth, where he became friends with several members of the ski patrol, who convinced him to apply and combine his love of skiing with his interest in medicine.  West also works as a mountain bike patroller and is the First Aid and CPR instructor for the snowmaking team, race department, Tamarack, unbound, tube park, maintenance, facilities, and others, training dozens of Mammoth Mountain’s employees annually.
